SPIRIT Demo Case 3: Integration of a HTHP in a paper mill
Poster presentation from the HTHP Symposium 2024
Construction, Integration, and Challenges of Implementing High-Temperature Heat Pumps in a Paper Mill: Valuable Insights into Real-World Applications
Maximilian Kriese from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) presented several new insights at the HTHP Symposium 2024, showcasing the third demo case of the SPIRIT Horizon Europe Project. This demonstration case involves the implementation of a high-temperature heat pump in a paper mill operated by Smurfit Kappa in the Czech Republic, aiming to decarbonize their heat demand and enhance energy efficiency.
- The project is a vital step towards achieving long-term sustainability goals and reducing the carbon footprint of industrial operations. As we move forward, the knowledge and experience we have gained will support the scaling up of this technology and make it possible to implement high-temperature heat pumps in diverse industrial settings, says Maximilian Kriese, German Aerospace Center.
The SPIRIT project is crucial for several reasons.
Firstly, it demonstrates the practical application and benefits of HTHP technology in energy-intensive industries. By recovering and upgrading waste heat, it is possible to significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuels, which leads to lower CO2 emissions.
Secondly, the insights gained from this demonstration will help refine and optimize HTHP technology, making it more accessible and cost-effective for broader industrial use. By addressing technical and economic barriers, the project aims to accelerate the adoption of sustainable heat pump solutions across various sectors.
